Thirty-One

Serena

Serena tried to swallow around the big lump that had formed in her throat, but she couldn’t push away the sadness that swelled up within her. Her voice felt strangled, and her mouth had gone dry.

The more she talked about her life, the harder it had become not to succumb to the tears that tugged at her eyes. She had almost forgotten for a moment what she had left behind.

She missed her life so much. Memories from the Spaceport of Armstrong and the planet itself where she grew up flashed through her mind. The faces of her dad and all her friends, people she probably would never see again, popped up behind her eyes.

She had fallen in love with her studies, her hobbies, and all the people she cared about, and it was lost to her now. Her heart sank deep into her chest, and a shuddering breath shook her shoulders.

Sucking in a deep breath, Serena forced herself upright. She had to brush this off, and she looked back up to Kurg’s dark eyes, watching her closely as she tried not to have a total meltdown.

Her throat still felt scratchy, so she cleared it, forcing a smile back on her face. She kept her voice quiet and soft as she asked, “What about you?”

Kurg shrugged. “What about me?”

“You’ve been listening to me ramble. There must be some interesting things about you. Hobbies, family, or trips that you cherish.”

“There’s nothing interesting about me,” he muttered.

“Come on,” she pleaded, dipping her eyebrows down between her eyes as she pushed her lips into a pout. “You can’t tell me you’ve spent your entire life here on this planet doing nothing.”

His eyes roamed over her face, and he sighed. “No, I haven’t.”

Serena straightened up with a grin, preparing for a story. “What did you do before you came here?”

“I fought in the war, and when it ended, I came here to find peace.” His voice was dark and gruff, not at all what she had expected, but to her surprise, he kept talking. “I saw tremendous death as a soldier. I was sent to planets to sway them to our side by any means necessary.”

His words cut off sharply. It seemed like he was going to keep going, but one look at her wide eyes, and the sentence ended, hanging in the air.

“What?” Serena asked innocently.

“It’s nothing for a lady like you to hear. War is a cruel thing, and not many people, including the people who have been through it, have the stomach to hear about it.”

She sank lower in her seat, disappointed that he stopped. She wanted to know more about Kurg. He rarely talked, and just when he was starting to open up to her, he clammed up again.

If his entire past was just killing and fighting, then it might be best for him to keep the stories short and vague. Serena knew that she would not be able to handle them, and it would be mortifying to prove him right on that.
